Alcoholism is also called addiction or alcohol dependence. It is a negative pattern of alcohol use that includes withdrawal from accepting the problem of overuse of alcohol or using alcohol for a long period of time and having a difficulty in reducing its usage. It is the failure to ignore or manage a craving for alcohol. Individuals, who suffer from alcoholism, habitually realize that they require the aid of alcohol in order to feel satisfied. The addicted individuals usually yearn for alcohol, but this yearning is powerful than the occasional yearning for some kind of foods. The yearning for alcohol is usually as rigorous as one feels the need in alcohol, as if it were water or food. They never feel they can spend a day, or in some extreme instances even an hour without taking alcohol. Other symptoms include spending more time recuperating from the use of alcohol, or maintaining the use of alcohol despite being aware of detrimental damages it does to one’s life.

Alcoholism is somewhat taken as a disease rather than an adopted pattern of behavior or a weakness. It is the third common mental sickness affecting more than 14 million people in the United States of America. It is not distinguished by the alcohol taken or how much is required to satisfy the yearning. Those who have been addicted usually develop a tolerance over some time meaning that they require alcohol to gratify the need for it, and while they take in more and more, severe health problems begin to show. It affects the user both physically and psychologically.

Alcoholism is far more different from alcohol abuse because an individual who abuses alcohol do not display a lack of management over the drinking. A person who uses alcohol may behave irresponsibly while under the control. These individuals may also expose themselves and others in jeopardy by operating or driving machinery while being drunk. As with alcoholism, work performance and relationship may suffer, since an individual who abuses alcohol tends to be careless. Since alcohol abuse and alcoholism differ, it can be a serious problem and must not be overlooked.

There are many indications of alcoholism. Most of the symptoms of alcohol abuse are also shown by those suffering from alcoholism. Some signs include secret consumption or blacking out, and having the desire to consume in order to feel normal. Other symptoms include undergoing economical, legal and marital difficulties caused by drinking and having signs of withdrawal in an instance, where alcohol is not within reach.

The research points out that some people are more likely to undergo alcoholism in their lives than the others. For instance, the genetic predisposition can define the likelihood of an individual be drawn to alcohol. In most cases, the children of alcoholics have a higher danger of turning into alcohol addicts themselves one day. The psychological issues also raise the risk of becoming addicted to alcohol.
