DNA Analysis and the Ideal Detective

Introduction

DNA Analysis refers to a technique that uses genes found in human blood to detect and prove an individual’s identity and genetic relationship. It used for genealogical investigations. DNA Analysis presumes that there are genetic links between people of the same ancestry and that this link is passed on from one generation to another in continual and persistent manner (Hamilton, 2008). DNA Analysis is based on the fact that every species has unique genetic sequences.

History of DNA Analysis

The first attempt to identify identity through DNA Analysis was carried out in 1985. It used fingerprints instead of blood for testing (Rudin & Inman, 2002). Today, DNA Analysis is used almost in every crime detection activity as well as in attaining paternal or maternal relationships between children and their parents. It is usually performed by forensic scientists to identify suspected criminals, to prove kinship between parents and their children, to recognize disaster victims and in determination of possible risks of inheriting genetic diseases. Additionally, DNA Analysis has been used by law courts to prove innocence of a person who did not perform a crime.

Qualifications for an Ideal Detective

In my opinion, an ideal detective technique should be highly accurate and be able to provide reliable results. It must make extensive use of a relatively small amount of specimen, for example, a mere drop of blood or a single strand of hair.

A good detective method should allow open communication between the forensic scientists. This will enhance exchange of information and ideas regarding the detection or investigation. Communication also facilitates quick collection of specimens and evidences.

Furthermore, an ideal detective should be conclusive and must not require further scrutiny. Its examination procedures and documentation should be easy to follow and carry out. It should be capable of being performed with much ease. Finally, it should allow safe and secure preservation of the specimens and evidences. The results of an ideal detective should be easy to interpret and understand.
