The Conscience of Military Unit Members

Introduction

It might be surprising to notice the lack of guilt in the soldiers that are in militaries. This is with consideration of the murders for which they are responsible. Every other time, there is war in many parts of the world. Many people get killed in the wars. It is these soldiers who commit most of the murders. However, not only are they not charged with the act, but they also do not feel guilty about it.

Relation with Stanley Milgram’s Experiment

The holocaust was one of the massacres that led to people asking these kinds of questions. This is where many innocent people were murdered without a course. This was the main thing that inspired the experiment conducted by Stanley. He investigated the willingness of participants to follow the orders of an authority figure, even if it meant going against one’s own moral values and ethics. He conducted an experiment that included teachers and learners. As the teacher asked questions to the learner, a fake electric shock was passed through the learner if they failed. The results showed that most of the teachers could not perform that task at will. However, they still performed it under an authority figure. This is the same case that applies to the soldiers in the military units. They operate on orders from their superiors. Therefore, failure to follow the orders seems worse than the murders that they commit. Therefore, they go ahead and execute the orders.

Therefore, the acts of the soldiers are just a manifestation of the motives of people who are higher in status.
