There are many definitions of Zionism and for the past few decades many scholars have come up with a different approach. The purpose of this paper is to explain Zionism and discuss why it was important for Jews to have established a nation of Israel. Describe the steps and time frame and events that prompted the creation of this nation.

Zionism is a political movement whose origin can be traced back to 1896 and it was founded by Theodor Herzl. The purpose of this movement was to ensure that the Jews returned to Eretz Yisrael (Zion) which they believed is their ancestral land; however this brought a lot of friction between the Jews and the Israelites and this conflict is still witnessed to date.  In addition to that there has been more conflict between Christian Zionism and Jews Zionism. According to Krusch, most Jews do not support Christian Zionists because they believe they have few interest and support for Israel apart from "minor" political support and it is for this reason (democracy) that the Jews strived to establish the modern day Israel (Krusch, 2010).

According to Krauthammer, there are ten different empires that have ruled Israel from 587BCE until 1948 and during each period there was a special event that took place (Krauthammer, 1998). Between 538 - 333 BCE was the reign of the Persian Empire and the exiled Jews returned during this period and the building of the second temple began. Other notable periods were between the 63 BCE and 313 CE and finally between 1917 and 1948 when the British took over.
