Toulmin Argument

Global warming is a gradual rise in Earth’s atmospheric temperature, and that of the seas and oceans. It should be prevented because it has resulted to the expansion of dried areas. It is a threat to human beings, and every other living creature.  Global warming has caused a rise in sea levels, and a consequent change in the amount and the pattern of the precipitation. It is a threat which has also challenged the scientists. This is because in 1988, the scientists, according to the Newsweek, had agreed in unison the dangers on the global warming although there were some doubts.

The statistics showed that the global mean temperatures have increased by a range of one degree Fahrenheit. That is, approximately during the past one century. Therefore, there is a need to stop the rising of the temperatures before it is too late. This is a role to everybody, scientist and non-scientist. This is because the effect is felt on everybody, to the one who contributed to the temperature rise and also to the innocent.  Before one takes a step towards the prevention of global warming, it is important to consider the causes and the measures which should be taken to counter them (Linden Richard, 487).

Preventing a threat is better than dealing with a threat itself. If global warming is prevented, we will for sure reduce the effects of the gradually increasing temperature. In his film, “An Inconvenient Truth”, Al Gore argues that both the earth and its climate are dynamic, and so can change with or without external factors. However, the research has shown that humanactivity is the leading cause of the global warming. This is in accordance with Gregg Easterbrook, an environmental journalist. Therefore, we should take caution on what we do, by considering its consequences to the environment.

First, we should take into consideration the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It level has increased at a considerable range from 19^th century to the present. The data shows an increase from 280 parts per million to 387 parts per million.Monitoring carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere will help to know the steps to take. Carbon dioxide is an infrared absorber, produced in a green house, and its level in the atmosphere is directly proportional to the global warming. Some may argue that the amount of carbon dioxide is so small to cause the rise in temperature. However, if every thing else was kept constant, and the level of the gas increased, this will cause global warming.

It is also very important to look into natural variations. Failure to understand the natural climate change will make it impossible to counter the problem of global warming. It is wise to differentiate between the human activities that lead to increasing temperature, and the factors which occur naturally, which are beyond our control. However, the small increase in global warmth has been proved to be caused more by an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere other than the naturally occurring natural fluctuations.

While it can be argued that the rise in temperature is very gradual, it is important to think of the future generation. The effect felt today may not be that bad, but what about some years to come? Would you like the future human generation to live in suffering because of selfishness of the people who left so many years ago? It is of great importance to care for the unborn. The only way is to prevent global warming, no matter how much it will cost us, it is our role! It does not matter on the level of education or age, it is just taking action.
