Two Stories

"The Yellow Wallpaper"

The point of view of the first person is when the narrator gives a detailed description of her own experiences when she was diagnosed with mental problems. She has a little child who was taken care of by John during the period of woman’s diagnosis. She writes how she was taken and locked up by her husband in the rural area. The narrator in some instances is employing the use of present tense. In such instances there is a description of the effects that these kinds of art have on her personality. Some other cases analyzed with the use of present tense include the description of the surrounding. The author describes how her room looks using present tense. She also describes the floor around the house using present tense.  There are some scenes that are narrated with the use of past tense. The narrator also gives a detailed story of several events that transpired through paragraphs. Each paragraph has a sole story.

“The Lottery”

The mood of the story is that of deception and shock. This mood is depicted from the ideas and themes presented in the story. It is the month of June and the villagers are undertaking their duties just like any other normal day for them. The tone is easy going, which brings about deception. The Lottery starts at 10 and is believed to be through by 12 noon to give villagers a chance to be back to their homes. The act of emphasizing how the event will not take up afternoon dinner time is a deception. The villagers participate in an event that later leads to the demise of Tessie Hutchinson. This happens despite the event of rock pilling that is seen as boy’s-game. Various acts that seem normal cause shock in the eyes of the unsuspecting villagers. The tone of “The Lottery” emphasizes the deceptive and shocking mood of the story.
