Your  arteries  that  supply  blood  to  the   muscles  of  the   heart  have  been  blocked   and  this  has  resulted  in  an  injury  of  the  muscles  of  the  heart  due  to  insufficient  blood  in  them.  This  condition  may  have  been  caused  by  several  factors :  blood  pressure   exceeding   the  normal  limits  which  are  140  over  90  mmHg  resulting  to  tension  in  the  arteries , progressive  thickening  and  hardening  of   the  arteries  due  to  deposits  of  fat  on  their  walls  and  cigarette  smoking (Shridhar , 2007).  You  will  be  able  to  understand  how  these  factors  can  affect  your  heart    and  also  how you  can  change  your lifestyle  so  as  to  reduce  chances  of  suffering  this  condition  again  once  you  read  this  pamphlet. 

High  blood  pressure  which  has  caused  tension  in  your  arteries  has  resulted  to  an  injury  in  the  inner  lining  of  the  arteries  (Shridhar , 2007). This  has  led  to  a  build  up  of  lipids  and  other  substances  in  the  injured  areas . This   has  contributed  to  formation  of  blood  clots  within  the  arteries  which  prevent  smooth  passage/flow    of  blood  and  this  has  resulted  to  an  injury  to  heart muscles  due  to  insufficient   blood  in  them. High  lipid (fat)  levels  in  your  blood  may  also  have  caused  this  condition (Shridhar , 2007).  These lipids  are  the  low- density  lipoprotein  which  are  composed of  a  combination  of  lipid(fat)  and  protein .  These   low-density  lipoproteins  are  considered  as  bad  cholesterol  since  they  transport  cholesterol  from  the  liver  to  the  body  tissues . These   low-density  lipoproteins  deposit  cholesterol  on  the  artery walls  causing  a  hard, thick  substance  called  cholesterol  plague  to  form  on  the  artery  walls (Shridhar , 2007). 

Cigarette  smoking  increases  the  number  of  heart  beats  per  minute  and  causes  narrowing  of  the  blood  vessels  outside the  heart  due to  a  contraction  of  the  vessel's  muscular  walls.  Cigarette  smoking  also  causes  blood  pressure  to  exceed  normal  limits  hence  overworking  the  heart  muscle (Shridhar , 2007). Cigarette  smokers  also  breath  in  carbon   dioxide  which  decreases  the  amount  of  oxygen  in  the  oxygen  carrying  protein  pigment  in  the  red  blood cells. These  factors  cause  the  heart  muscle  to  work  harder  while  it  has  a  lower/ subnormal   concentration  of  oxygen. 

A  balloon-tipped  catheter  has  been  inserted  through  your  artery  to  enlarge  it since  its  narrowed (Smith , 2007) . The  hard, thick  substance  called  cholesterol  plague   that had  formed   in  your affected   artery  has  also  been  removed. These  procedures  have led  to  the  opening  up  of your  affected  artery  to  facilitate  increased  flow  of  blood  through  it (Smith , 2007).  You  are  advised  to  schedule  extra  time  during  your  next  appointment  to  talk  to  the  nurse  about  how  you  can  modify  your  lifestyle  to  decrease  the    risk  of  a  recurrence   of  this  condition. 

The  cardiovascular  system  can  regarded  as  the  transport  system  of  the  body  which  has  basically  three  components:  the  heart , the  blood  vessels  and  the  blood  itself (Shridhar , 2007). While  the  heart  pumps  the  blood , the  blood   vessels  act  as  the  delivery  routes  for  the  blood.  Blood  on  the  other  hand  is  a  fluid  that  contains  the  nutrients   required  by  the  body  and  also   removes    wastes  from  the  body.  This  system  also  helps   to regulate  body  temperature  and  PH (Shridhar , 2007).   

The  heart  is divided  into  two  sides  with  each  side  having  two  chambers.  These  chambers  are  the  atrium  which  is  the  upper  chamber and  the  ventricle  which  is  the  lower  chamber (Shridhar , 2007).  Blood  rich  in  carbon dioxide  and  cellular  waste  products  is  carried  from  the  body  to  the  heart  by  the  blood  veins .  This  blood  goes  to  the  right  atrium  and  then  to the  right  ventricle    and   from  here  its  pumped  to  the  lungs  to  dispose  of  wastes  and  then  obtain  a  fresh  oxygen  supply . Blood  from  the  lungs  returns  to  the  heart  through  the  left  atrium  and  then  through  the  left  ventricle  (Shridhar , 2007).  This  blood  is  then  pumped  out  of the  heart  by  the  left  ventricle  into  the  aorta  which  sends  it  to  the  small  arteries  which  carry  it  to  the  rest  of  the  body  to  supply  oxygen (Shridhar , 2007).
