The Stem Cell Research

Introduction

Embryonic stem-cell research is a very controversial subject of debate. It has been viewed by the church, especially the Roman Catholic one, as an immoral act and commercialization of human life. It is a major concern to many churches since human life is God-given and should never the taken for grant, thus any scientific break-through, which is aimed at commercializing this noble gift should be discouraged.

Supporting Evidence

These cells can be harvested from the stem cells of adult individuals or, basically, from the embryos. The harvesting of stem cells from embryos presents a bioethics and a great dilemma in reference to the social justice. Such activities appear to be against moral values. The doctors accord such research while ignoring the evil they cause. Besides, the issue presents a lead question underpinning the process where embryos are sacrificed. This is total disrespect and commercialization of human life. Moreover, this debate takes issues with the moral decadence that technology imposes on our society where much trust is accorded to the medicine at the expense of the patient and/or other recipients (Stem Cell Research, 2007).

Analysis of the Most Valid Ideas or Claims

Naturally, the medical research has revolved around embryonic stem cells and adult cells till recently. Adults’ cells were really complicated for they were limited to becoming only particular specific tissue types (Sowle, 2001). The researchers could not model them to fit the varied number of cells needed to combat diverse diseases. This left the embryonic cells much in demand, forcing the researchers to commercialize the process. However, the embryonic protection in the research process brought a lot of criticism forcing the US government to impose a ban on the activities involving harvesting of embryonic stem cells. This explains why this field of science now encompasses far and wide into the regenerative medicine. There have been numerous bottlenecks in the process including what can be described as lack of respect for the earlier human beings and the social morality erosion that called for adoption of certain prevailing rules. The industry has been shaped and will continue to embrace the spirit of solidarity. Even though, many Christians, especially those ones from the Roman Catholic faith, do not support the idea behind the stem cell research, the practice is still persistent in the modern times. Scientists are working round the clock to make sure there is some break-through in this molecular research. Therefore, there is little doubt that the practice will soon be adopted in many parts of the world. This is due to the fact that the concerned scientists are bent on spreading the perceived ‘benefits’ regarding this new scientific break-through.

In fact, some scientists manage to receive private funding while the federal government has imposed a ban on this kind of research. This explains the leak in the US policy on such research where protection was only accorded to embryos as immunity to being bought or sold. Therefore, it is evidenced that there has never been strict policies, which discourage this kind of regenerative medicine.

Conclusion

Summing up the available data, when private companies endeavor to fund a project that has been banned by the federal government, I am inclined to think that the sole reason would be the ultimate gain it will achieve when the research is complete. This is commercialization of human life since what matters is the financial gain rather than the common good of the society. Furthermore, the research of stem cells does not violate any human rights and can be considered absolutely ethical. This changed is highly welcomed in scientific world and has crucial role in critical and reflective though about development of modern biology.
