Family is an important element in the growth of a society. Each family has its own characteristics and attributes that make it unique from other families. People especially learn a lot from their families through culture, language, modeling of character. Therefore a child brought up in violent homes or conflict areas grow up physically, emotionally and psychologically different from those who were brought up in complete loving families.

There are diverse family types from nuclear families to extended families. Each of these family types has its advantages and disadvantages. A child brought up in a single parent family type is likely to experience panic in the form of feeling helpless and a sense of powerlessness. This is evidenced for example in a boy child who would want to learn how to ride a bicycle but does not have a father figure to help him. Same applies to a girl child brought up with a father who would feel helpless when in need of advice on feminine issues such as menstrual periods and body development. The nuclear family and the extended family are most unikely to incite panic for children. The reason is that the children have a lot of family members surrounding them who can guide them and assist them in time of need. In the extended family, children can get aid from anyone from parents o grandparents hence diminishing the presence of panic. The children also get to learn from them family members about general principles of life hence they go grow up as extroverts who can handle anything life throws at them.

There are various family characteristics to a healthy family system. However some of these characteristics that will contribute to a sense of stability and disaster preparedness is open communication. Open communication, love and trust are the three ingredients to a successful relationship. Children should grow up in environments whereby family members communicate with each freely and solve any conflicts as they arise. This environ will teach them the significance of communication and trust which they will apply in other future relationships. These children will never experience the feeling of helplessness as they will always acknowledge when things get bad and how to avoid them.

Children brought up in loving and positive environments will succeed in life. They will learn how to avoid disasters and also how to navigate disasters when they do take place.
