The film The Hunger Games portrays a gloomy visualization of the future, with the release imagined only using human resources, such as generosity, will and wit. The movie takes place in the dystopian future where the wretched and poor majorities live under the high tech oppression of minority wealthy elites. This film depicts the society that the wealthy elites are trying to set up as the new world order. In this essay, we will analyze the features of the world portrayed in the movie, The Hunger Games, and analyze how they relate to the intentions of establishing a new world order.

Set in a dystopian future, the film paints a dark picture of tomorrow’s world, whether from the social, political or economic point of view. It is a life where the wealthy elites flourish on the backs of a starving population, without any fear or remorse. At the same time, the government uses the voyeurism and perversity of the mass media as a way of keeping its unjust social system intact. The film takes place in Panem, a state characterized by totalitarianism and encompassing the whole of North American territory. This is the kind of life elites want to establish, where the regular states would merge and form a single world government with a single central power. An example of this is Canada and the United States, which have merged to form a single country, step likely to be followed by many regions.

The film is in the nation of Panem, a country that rose from the ruins of North America. The country has 12 districts with the main city with the name of Capitol housing the rich section of the society. Every year, a boy and a girl of ages 12 to 18 compete in the “Hunger Games”where they fight to death in an enclosed stadium. Katniss Everdeen nominates herself to fight in order to save her younger sister who is selected as a tribute for the fight. She leaves her best friend Gale and joins fellow tribute Peeta Mellark for training in preparation for the fight. Her only hope is to win the fight and reunite with her family again.

Fighting for survival is a clear example of what many people go through in the society today. The poor people have to struggle to ensure that they survive in the cruel world. The rich, on the other hand, enjoy watching the matches from their television sets indicating that they do not notice the suffering the poor go through in their daily lives. Moreover, the current day politicians incite the poor people to fight each other for their own selfish gains at an extremely small pay. This is the grim future that the series portray, killing any hopes for change in the society in the near future.

The film is also a depiction of the current social lives of typical adolescents. Love triangles are particularly common among the adolescents with a situation when more than one boy is pursuing a single girl, or a single boy being sought by more than one girl. The story of The Hunger Games surrounds a love triangle between the girl, Katniss and two suitors, who depict different ways of being a man. Gale, who is her childhood’s best friend, is a fellow hunter, a strong, silent kind, with the tendency of criticizing the government. Peeta Mellark, who is a fellow contestant at the game, is a smart guy, whose only aim is to win the game to keep Katniss alive.

In Panem, concepts of freedom are disappearing, slowly replaced with high a level dictatorship based on monitoring, surveillance, indoctrination of mass media, and radical division of social classes and police oppression. The elite society in the film lives an extravagant life and indulges in all forms of fashion. They perceive the rest of the society as inferior, and they can ridicule, tame and control them at will. All resources have been moved from the districts to the Capitol, where the elites live. This is a typical characteristic of the modern world, where politicians and the wealthy people in the society amass lots of wealth while the poor continue to suffer under the rein of such people. Economic inequality is a subject of discussion in every country in today’s world. The poor continue being poor while the rich continue being rich. The film only indicates that the situation is not likely to change in the near future.

The film The Hunger Games is without doubt a clear depiction of the modern society, and how it will be in the future. It is a dark future, where the poor people suffer under the wrath of the elites and the wealthy in the society. Young teenagers continue fighting for survival under high unemployment levels while the rich ridicule and misuse them. The government’s dependence on mass media and high-level surveillance to keep the society in check is something the modern world is already experiencing. Today, governments are listening to people’s telephone conversations in the name of fighting terrorism. The government also uses the police to oppress and silence all the people who seem to be against its ideas and leadership. Politicians set up people against each other resulting to genocides and massacres all across the world. The future looks gloomy, without any hopes for the world embracing equality and providing equal opportunities for all people regardless of their social class.
