Degas engaged himself in sculpting apart from painting. One of his sculptor work was the “The little 14-year old Dancer.” This was sculpted at a time when statues did not have the modern day influence. The little 14-year old Dancer is a statue of a dancer dressed in, a muslin tutu, ballet shoes, and a satin bow. The statue has a length which is three quarters life size. It is reported that when Degas was creating this statue the influence of sculpture work was almost non existence. Degas sculpted the statue in wax over a wooden frame.

It is claimed that the statue was that of Marie Van Goethem who was dancer at an opera. The statue is done with great skills. The girl on the statue to start with looks very real. Going round the statue shows the reality of this claim. However the only contrast which comes out clearly is the wax she is made of which makes her look a bit odd. The dress she has worn however perfectly fits her well with the strips flowing downwards in a perfect manner. The statue is skillfully done to radiate boldness and it can be clearly seen that the girl is quite proud: the expression on her face shows the boldness and pride. Her arms behind shows her courage and readiness to dance. She is presented as one who is hardworking and disciplined.
